Test Tube Babies
History - 1x57

When Louise Brown, the world's first test tube baby, was born in Great Britain in 1978, the event was heralded as the start of a revolution in human reproduction. It was the culmination of a decade-long scientific effort to conceive babies through in vitro fertilization, or IVF. This AMERICAN EXPERIENCE interweaves the story of two doctors whose work was condemned by the Catholic Church and questioned the limits of science, acting as a precursor to the current debate over cloning and stem cell research.
