This film tells the story of Hoa, a Vietnamese-boy who was seriously hurt and disfigured when an American non-detonated phosphor-bomb blew up in his face. After watching a news report on television, a Swedish businessman raised the necessary funds to bring Hoa to Boston for extensive surgery performed by one of the world's most accomplished plastic surgeons. Ultimately, the restoration of Hoa's face was not substantial, and after eight months Hoa left the US disappointed. He thought he would have a new face; instead he had more scars. Eventually, he comes to grips with the fact that his face may never be fully restored, even with subsequent surgery. He decides he would like to work to help others avoid the same fate that he himself has endured.
