Human Interest, Science - 1x56 or 1x80

This film puts a human face on the battle being waged in the deaf community over cochlear implants, a medical technology which is welcomed by some as the long-awaited cure for deafness and reviled by others as a cruel, abusive procedure which threatens to destroy a cherished language and deaf culture. In a cinema verite style, the program explores this seemingly irreconcilable conflict as it illuminates the ongoing struggle for identity among deaf people today. The film will look carefully and sympathetically at both sides of this highly charged fence, urging acceptance of personal choice and encouraging a resolution to a conflict that has tragically undermined the education of deaf people for generations.
