I. M. Pei: Building China Modern
Arts & Culture - 1x53

Like many Chinese-Americans, the architect I.M. Pei is playing a role in helping China enter the modern world.  He aims to point the way to the future -- respecting Chinese tradition by thinking about the need for change.  But China today is a different place than the prewar country he left as a teenager.  And after eight decades of living in the U.S., Pei is now "foreign".  Returning to the country of his birth with an agenda of change, he inevitably enters into a crucible of conflict. IM PEI: BUILDING CHINA MODERN tracks the story over the course of four years.
