Hosted by renowned writer and television personality Bruce Feiler (host of the PBS series Walking the Bible, and a New York Times best-selling author), Sacred Journeys is a six-part series on pilgrimages around the world. Each episode focuses on a different chapter of ancient history revealed through the personal stories of contemporary explorers who set out on the same profound journeys that people have taken for a thousand years or more. The series’ first episode follows three pilgrims—one Christian, one Jewish and one Muslim—as they travel to Jerusalem, a sacred spiritual center for all three religions. Other pilgrimages include: Shikoku, Japan, where an 870-mile walking pilgrimage takes sojourners to 88 Buddhist shrines; Hajj, the sacred site for more than 1.5 billion Muslims who must travel there at least once in order to fulfill one of their sacred duties; Lourdes, France, a destination for Catholic pilgrims in search of its healing powers; Kumbh Mela, where Hindus seek to purify themselves in the Ganges, or to travel to the next world; and Osun, Nigeria, where a Yoruban festival combines African and Caribbean faiths with Roman Catholicism.
